Meeting with Eric-Jean Floureusse, founder and artistic director of Monolithe édition.

Eric-Jean Floureusse, Monolithe édition

After 20 years developing Aeroconseil, a company with 1200 employees, Eric-Jean Floureusse, the President, decided to sell the group in Toulouse to set up 88I88 (Double Double Huit). He opened then a new chapter in his life.

.

His ambition: to share his views on the art of living by creating a laboratory of activities inspired by values of authenticity, humanism, harmony and pleasure. The luxury hotel sector was his first ground of expression with the opening in 2014 of the concept-hotel Hameau des Baux. The second was the creation of E&E Esprit XXème, an agency of interior layout and design, specialised in furniture from the second half of the 20th century.

.

As a devotee of the finer things, he gives a prominent place to art, architecture and design. We’ve had to wait three years for him to reveal a new facet of his talent as an artistic director and project leader with Monolithe edition.

Why become an editor?
To become an editor wasn’t the main goal. To be an editor is to enable talented men and women to freely express themselves in a spirit of co-construction, a task for the hand and for the mind. Above all, it was the meeting with designers that led me toward the edition of contemporary furniture and lighting. My father was an architect. He probably gave me a taste for work as well as a taste for the making process of group projects. This activity is part of a global art of living project. I love good and beautiful things. I especially enjoy being able to share them. That’s how Hameau des Baux and E&E Esprit XXème were born. To open a luxury hotel, an art gallery, an interior design agency, a restaurant, and now an edition firm, it was a way to open wide the doors to creativity in the service, in the plate, as well as in interior design. To be an editor is a new human venture and the possibility for me to feel at the fullest the creative energy !

.

How was this first collection built?
The wish to offer a universe made of pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories that can easily blend in a home or a hotel. A collection born from a collective intelligence. First, I hadn’t wanted to associate Monolithe edition with a product or a “star” designer. This takes time. As for the choice of items, I immediately thought about the core of a house (a table, a bookcase, a lamp, a chair) to launch today a consistent line. All editors will tell you this is not the easiest thing to create and I’d rather give us some time. Julie Pfligersdorffer, Pierre Dubourg, Piergiel Fourquié and Guillaume Delvigne have designed height very contemporary items. For the first collection, we wanted to highlight the meeting of materials with a particular care taken to junctions as well as to curved shapes giving the products a soothing and cosy roundness.

.

Your definition/conception of design ?
For a long time, I was feeling uncomfortable with the term “design”. It is overused. It can apply to so many things apart from objects and furniture ! It is often misused to mean contemporary. For me, it is synonymous of creation. A creation often intertwined with a notion of functionality. As for an architect, the challenge for a designer is to achieve the best overview of what’s beautiful and what’s useful.

.

To whom is Monolithe edition addressed ?
To the lovers of lines and design. To the lovers of materials too. In our first collection, they will find easy-going and soothing items that will tag along with them through time. I picture our clients as art lovers, hedonistic, generous… at any rate curious and loving life. There is something joyful and bright in the collection, playing on the materials’ contrast. A collection that will touch men and women, for it uses masculine and feminine codes. Our creations are blending in all types of layouts. The simplicity and sobriety of materials and lines enable nice encounters with classic furniture or a minimalist interior. The collection is an invitation to mix styles and to eclectism ! I picture our creations in an upper class home, an industrial loft, an office or a hotel. They are intended for individuals as well as professionals. My own experience in the hotel-restaurant and interior design sectors is an asset in the relationship with the professionals.

.

Where are you distributed ?
Regardless of the sector of activity, I think distribution is living a fundamental revolution. Nowadays, developments are done through networks and Monolithe edition will focus on a direct distribution. We will also select an handful of distributors with a strong identity, prescribers in their field of activity, who will have the desire to become a partner in our development. As a new comer we can innovate and try out a new distribution model. And again, all creations are possible as long as human beings are at the heart of the system.
